    Starting a 52-week photo project

During the first days of this year I was reading several interesting articles on photography that made me ponder over my photography aspirations and expectations. Are there any? Am I satisfied with my achievements? Is there anything I should change or do better? Those questions didn’t appear out of the blue. From time to time I heard their whispering and was aware of their existence and I knew they were just waiting for the right moment to speak up. I started taking photographs with an old Russian easy-to-use camera as a teenager. I was documenting our holidays but I lacked interest in photography. Then many many years later I met…

    Black and white

Before Christmas I was making an appointment and on that occasion I was speaking with an assistant over the phone, with a woman I had not known. Her voice was pleasant and friendly and when I was to meet her finally, I was looking forward to that meeting. But expectations are deceiving troublemakers so when I actually saw her, I could not believe it was the same person. I did not like her appearance and felt disappointed. After exchanging the words we needed to say I got back to my car and went home. While driving, it began to dawn on me that my what-I-felt-at-first-sight perception was quite silly. She…

    PF 2014

At the close of the first day of this new year I’d like to send my best wishes to you and accompany them by words that I find very wise: “Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain. An occasional glance towards the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point.”― Harold B. Melchart Beauty and inspiration often lie in the ordinary so let’s keep our eyes, minds and hearts open and enjoy that all. A Happy New Year!

Nearing the end of the year

Christmas is over and I hope that you spent nice and peaceful holidays. Generally I do not enjoy the Christmas time much but this year it was different and I feel deep in my bones that though I’ve gone through many difficulties lately, there is also the good I’ve received and I’m grateful for that. During Christmas, dense fog was covering our surroundings and we were staying at home a lot. Yesterday sun appeared at last and we were eager to go out for a walk. It was a welcome opportunity to brush dust off my camera, though I knew that the road we follow on our walks in the…

    Unplanned

Before I got married, my favourite styles of music had been contemporary folk and classical music. Then my husband-to-be entered my life and brought his favourite rock music into our household. I discovered quite a new musical world but did not find it overwhelmingly appealing. I did like some rock ballads and from time to time a rock song but did not enjoy and often could not stand those lengthy instrumental interludes my husband was speaking about passionately. A few weeks ago he bought a CD. He did not tell me a word about it but I noticed it playing one day and as its music aroused my curiosity I…

    Decision-making issues

Here and there I read local job advertisements and quite a few of them require good (or rather excellent) decision-making skills. The potential employers want the potential employee not to be afraid of making decisions and be willing to take responsibility for them, probably in situations and under conditions which may be very stressful and difficult. Without hesitation, I put these ads aside. I know I am not that kind of person. I do not make my decisions easily. Not even the most trivial ones. Imagine me, standing in a shop, not able to choose a T-shirt. I like a few but I am not sure which one looks good…

    Autumnal moments

This year it seems to me that autumn has been slipping through my fingers mercilessly. There is always so much to do and leaves have been changing their colours and falling to the ground far too quickly. In a desperate effort to catch a few moments I took my camera when we went shopping a few days ago and made a short stop in a near village called Dolní Lukavice where there is a rather run-down castle surrounded by quite a large park. I’ve never been there so this has been the first time. The sky was overcast but here and there a few rays shined and lit the scene.…

    Church in Břeclav – Poštorná

During our summer vacation in Moravia we made many plans and visited many places but the church I’m going to show you today wasn’t on any of our itineraries. We were just passing it during one of our trips and because it attracted our attention, we made a short stop by it when going back, to take a closer look. And a few photos of course. Unfortunately the sharp evening sun and fading light made it quite difficult to take a decent photo against the sky but you can at least imagine what the building looks like. There were so many interesting details and if it wasn’t that late we…

    Windmill in Kuželov

Kuželov is a village with just about four hundred inhabitants but it is worth visiting. On a hill above the village you can see and visit an original windmill of a Dutch type, the only windmill of this type in the whole Moravia nowadays. The windmill was built in 1842 at the expense of the village. 300 horse loads of stones were used for the building and I wonder, how many kilograms that could be? I haven’t found any conversion formula… The width of the mill is 8,6 metres at the base, height about 10 metres, diameter of the wind wheel 15,6 metres. In 1904 the windmill was bought by Mr…
